It’s done!

You might remember almost a year ago I posted that I was creating the concept art and storyboards for  the animated sequences in a short film .  Well, it’s done!  New Soul, starring Larry Miller and directed and co-written by Michael Fry is finished and being submitted to film festivals, including Sundance, SXSW, and the LA Comedy Fest.

Here’s some character model sheets I did for the production:GaySamoanCOLsm

White House security breach

On Friday a man jumped the fence in front of the White House and made it all the way up to an unlocked front door before being tackled by security.  So now according to the Washington Post the Secret Service is considering increasing the buffer area around the White House.

It’s a natural reaction to say “increase the security- whatever it takes!” after an incident like this but let me offer another perspective.  I’ve lived in Washington before and after the attacks of 9-11 and believe me security has already dramatically increased.  Streets are closed, the attitude and aggressiveness  of the Capitol Hill and SCOTUS police have changed and there are so many more areas restricted and off-limits to ordinary Americans. The outside upper level around the Capitol with the dramatic view of the Mall and the Washington Monument is still closed to the general public and you never know when a guard will scream at you to get off a sidewalk because a motorcade is coming down the street.

Here’s my thoughts about this in a 2004 cartoon: 08052004TheTerroristsWon

Walt Disney Family Museum and Mary Blair

Last week I visited the Walt Disney Family Museum to see the Mary Blair special exhibition with my friend and former CalArts colleague, Ralph Eggleston.  For any fans of Mary Blair, this is a must-see exhibition with several pieces from her earlier watercolor days to the incredible concept art she created for Disney studios.

I was also pleasantly surprised at the permanent collection in the museum.  There are so many  personal photos and items, like the wonderful miniatures Disney collected during his travels throughout Europe after World War II.  Be sure to spend time in the main museum if you can.07302014DisneyMuseum

The children of Gaza

After multiple ceasefires, it looks as though Israel has withdrawn forces from Gaza.  There are varying numbers being reported but according to the UN at least 1670 Palestinians have been killed, 296 of them children and almost 9000 have been injured.  Israel has lost 67 soldiers and 3 civilians.

I’ve read so many comments and articles about the justification for these bombings which frankly just make me shake my head.  Here’s what I think about those justifications:

Editorial cartoonist Etta Hulme has died

Etta Hulme, the cartoonist for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram has died at the age of 90.  Etta was a kickass cartoonist and a hoot in person.  Although I haven’t see her for several years, she used to regularly attend our AAEC conventions.  I can still picture her smile whenever she walked into the room. Humor’s Edge opening -2004

My exhibition at the Library of Congress opened ten years ago today.

HumorsEdgeInviteCoverSM

You won’t find a more dedicated group who understand and value editorial cartoons than the people in the Prints and Photographs division at the Library of Congress. They’re incredibly knowledgeable about the art form and its role in American history and are devoted to preserving and protecting the original art.  To have the Library of Congress interested in adding my work to their collection was an amazing honor and an experience I’ll forever treasure.

Calder, Lautrec, and Feiffer

One of the things I love best about living in Washington DC is the ability to just take a short walk down to the Mall and see the latest museum exhibition.  My favorite ones (so far) were the Alexander Calder and Toulouse Lautrec exhibitions  at the National Gallery of Art and the Jules Feiffer one at the Library of Congress.
